If you're ready to take the next step up from a small refractor, or if you want your first telescope to have more light-gathering power than the typical starter telescope offers, then we heartily recommend the Orion AstroView 6 Equatorial Reflector Telescope. It's hard to beat this 6" aperture equatorial reflector telescope for all-around performance at a great price. Its 150mm-diameter (6") parabolic Newtonian reflecting optics (focal length 750mm, f/5) pull down pleasing views of a rich variety of celestial objects. With the included 10mm Plossl telescope eyepiece (1.25"), you'll roam detailed lunar landscapes at 75x power; or see distinct, variegated cloud bands on Jupiter's disk. Pop in the included 25mm Plossl telescope eyepiece for some deep-sky thrills, where modest 30x power rewards you with contrast-rich images of cloudy nebulas and sparkling star clusters framed in a wide field of view. With additional optional telescope eyepieces or a power-boosting Barlow lens (sold separately), you can push the power to 150x or more on clear evenings.
Metal telescope tube rings fasten the reflector optical tube to the sturdy equatorial (EQ) mount. It features slow-motion manual control knobs, which let you center objects in the viewing field, then track their apparent motion as the Earth's rotation makes them appear to migrate across the sky. The adjustable steel tripod provides ample stability and variable height. The tripod leg braces are hinged at the center for quick setup and fold-up. A roomy accessory tray is also included to hold your idle telescope eyepieces, while also enhancing tripod stability.
As a bonus, this special solar telescope kit also includes a full aperture film solar filter that fits over the front of your telescope. This Orion white-light solar filter is designed to see sunspots and granulation around the sunspots on the solar disk. It is not a Hydrogen-alpha filter which shows prominence and solar flare detail. For that type of solar viewing, consider upgrading to a Coronado Solar Telescope. Also included is a glare-reducing Moon filter to better observe the myriad details of the Moon.
Orion assures that all solar filters are tested at specialized labs that are accredited to verify compliance with the ISO 12312-2 safety specifications for solar viewing.
Explore the fun of daytime astronomy with the included Safety Film Solar Filter.
Our Safety Film Solar Filter lets you safely observe sunspots as they march across the surface of our nearest star. It rejects all harmful light from the Sun, allowing a very small fraction to pass through, so you can safely enjoy the fun of daytime solar astronomy and solar eclipses. This solar filter is designed and manufactured in the USA.
Cut the Moon's glare and see more detail on its surface with the Orion 13% Transmission Moon Filter .
This popular accessory reduces glare and boosts contrast so you can enjoy more-detailed views of lunar surface features. It blocks 87% of the Moon's brightness to provide a more comfortable view and reveal subtle details. Housed in a metal cell, it's a neutral density glass filter that will not alter the natural color of the Moon.
The AstroView 6 Equatorial Reflector Telescope has high-quality features that belie its affordable price, such as a 2" Crayford-style focuser with compression locks to hold the eyepieces securely in place without marring the barrels, and a four-vane, adjustable secondary mirror support. The EZ Finder II reflex finder scope helps you locate your targets easily for closer inspection through the telescope. The finder boasts easy alignment knobs and a quick-release dovetail bracket. Collimation thumbscrews make occasional alignment of the optics an easy, hassle-free procedure.
